About
Magda Kress is a queer NYC-based upright and electric bassist, and can frequently be found playing one or two basses all over the city in musicals, concerts, cabarets, and recording sessions. She especially loves collaborating with theatre-makers and performing new works. Past favorites include Pretty Woman (1st national tour), Dead Outlaw (sub, Audible Theater), Folk Wandering (Pipeline Theatre Company), The Tattooed Lady (New Dramatists), and Conversion (soundtrack, Chronicle Cinema). She regularly plays with Blake Allen's award-winning An Evening with... Series, drag queen Doris Dear, and pop/rock band Fab the Duo. She is a frequent hire for concerts at venues such as 54 Below, Green Room 42, Joe's Pub, Cutting Room, and (le) poisson rouge.
She received her master’s degree in Music Composition from Bowling Green State University. Her compositions have been programmed on several concerts and festivals, including Electronic Music Midwest (Lewis University), Vox Novus' Circuit Bridges Series (Gallery MC) and Fifteen Minutes of Fame Series (Jan Hus Church, with cellist Craig Hultgren), Folk Wandering Folk Family Concert (ART/NY Theatres) and the Toledo Symphony Orchestra Student Composer Reading Session (Bowling Green State University).
